The construction of the metro in the mid-1930s was a new phenomenon in the country, almost everywhere was talked about, composed songs. Samokhvalov dreamed of capturing metro builders using the fresco technique. But his dreams did not come true. In 1937, Samokhvalov wrote an oil portrait-picture “Metrostroevka with a drill”. Strength, clarity, beauty, spiritual and physical health, internal inspiration, determination – these are the features of this truly fresco image. “She, like a goddess, and yet she is our, Russian girl”-this is how the artist Deinek characterized the “Metrostroevka with the drill”. Orientation on classic samples when creating this image is obvious: the athletic figure of the metro-building, its pose, a spectacular drapery, crossed legs to match some Greco-Roman goddess. Working on Metrostroevki, dreaming of frescoes, Samokhvalov experienced the passion for Michelangelo’s work, saw in it “… the greatest revolutionary artist who carried out the ideal of democracy in his works-the harmony of the power of spiritual with the power of the body. “. “New Man” in the image of a strong woman is one of the relevant topics in Soviet art of the 1930s.
