The picture was created in the year of the Nazis attack on the Soviet Union, and here the forging of the sword can be interpreted as preparations for the war with the descendants of the Nibelungs, the ancient people, who, according to the tradition of the Worms, who lived on the territory of the current city, on the left bank of the Rhine. The legend of their possession of the noble treasures of the gold treasure and weapons is associated with the nibelungs. It is also possible that Roerich had in mind the “Kurumchinsky blacksmiths” – the epic Asian tribe, which lived within Altai and Transbaikalia, who pour weapons for the Soviet Union.
